Internationals Women's Day: See her potential

Each year on 8 March people around the world celebrate International Women’s Day - an opportunity to reflect on progress towards gender equality and what still needs to be done to create a fairer and more equitable world. At Orbis we know that blindness is a gender issue and are committed to alleviating unequal access to eye care.

Treating Kubri for trachoma during the pandemic

Kubri lives in a village in Gurage Zone. She and her husband travelled for one hour using a bajaj, a three wheeled vehicle to get to the health center where we meet them. Kubri has six children - two sons and four daughters. Kubri sells “Enset1”, a local tree which is a staple food throughout SNNPR, which grows in her backyard.

Saving sight in Ethiopia: Belay's story

Belay suffered excruciating pain in her right eye. As time passed, the pain grew and her vision worsened. In December 2020 Belay had an eye evaluation at an Orbis-supported health centre which led to sight-saving surgery, just in time. Four million people in Ethiopia are blind or visually impaired due to preventable or treatable causes, its health system has insufficient resources to address the need. In addition, Ethiopia has the highest global burden of trachoma, an eye infection that ultimately can lead to irreversible blindness, with 68 million people at risk.​​
