Gebre's Story

Gebre, from Gurage Zone, and was 55 years old when he lost his eyesight due to cataracts.

Gebre has always been a dedicated provider for his family. For years, he ran a small business selling beautiful traditional fabrics used to create local dresses and scarves—work that connected him to his community and heritage.

In September 2020, Gebre began to lose his sight, which made continuing his work impossible. With a strong sense of responsibility for his family, especially his wife and two children (out of seven) still living at home, he turned to farming to make ends meet. It was a tough transition, but Gebre didn’t give up—he was determined to keep moving forward.

When I heard about the services at this health centre, I didn’t hesitate” Gebre recalls. I came here to find a solution”.

Shortly after, the Covid-19 pandemic added to the difficulty of his situation. Yet Gebre stayed focused on keeping his family safe: “My only option was to protect myself and my family—by wearing a mask, washing my hands, and avoiding large gatherings.”

Gebre underwent successful cataract surgery in both eyes. The very next day, his world changed. His vision had dramatically improved, and so had his outlook.

Gebre had successful cataract surgery on both of his eyes. The day after his surgery, Gebre was very happy to witness a remarkable vision improvement in both of his eyes.
