Irish Woman Shares her Eye Care Skills
Mairead English is a senior staff nurse at the Regional Hospital in Limerick; an ophthalmic centre of excellence. She has been involved with Orbis for over 10 years, embarking on nine volunteer assignments with the charity to share her skills with nurses in areas of need.
Having lived and travelled across Africa for a number of years, she has a key insight into issues facing those living across the continent and enjoys working there to help improve access to quality medical care. She has volunteered across three continents, working in places such as Paraguay, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Tanzania and Uganda.
Mairead says: “I have been a volunteer with Orbis and the Flying Eye Hospital for many years, and I remain as enthusiastic now as ever I was! Personnel have come and gone in the interim, but the ethos, professionalism and commitment of the volunteers and staff has remained unchanged.
“In 2014 I travelled to Pampanga in the Philippines with Orbis. While there I worked in the Flying Eye Hospital operating theatre and shared skills with the local nursing staff. We had a number of very young children for surgery, and to see their successful visual outcomes the following morning was altogether tear wrenching! Now this child has a future!
“It was a wonderful programme where everybody benefits…..Me as much as anybody else!”
